New London to Port Jefferson NY (52 NM). We weigh anchor at dawn getting ready for a long 50+ nautical mile day. Claudia stayed in bed while I started the engine; she likes to sleep in and take the second shift. We headed down Thames river towards Long Island sound. A light southwesterly means no sailing today since we needed to make distance. First four hours into Long Island sound were met by foul current 1 to 1.5 knots against us; we barely moved at 4 knots until current changed at 1 PM. We arrived in Port Jeff around 4PM and picked up a mooring with PJ launch.

Port Jefferson was first settled in the 17th century and remained a rural community until its development as an active shipbuilding center in the mid-19th century. The village has since transitioned to a tourist-based economy. Downtown Port Jeff is full of shops and restaurant with Labor day weekend activities and people. Since we were leaving early tomorrow, we bought a delicious Italian takeout meal from Pasta Pasta and went back to dine onboard.
