Charm city, The City That Reads, The City of Firsts; these are only some of Baltimore’s nicknames. The birth place of the U.S. national anthem, what else would you expect in a destination that is richly varied in its characters and its attractions. There is so much to do here, whether with a family or on your own, that even with a week to kill you’ll barely make a dent. Museums, music, sports, history, performing arts, diverse neighborhoods and culinary exploration — they’re all here and within walking or water-taxi distance.

The Port of Baltimore was impressive. Lined with cargo ships from around the world. Almost 10 miles distance from the entrance to the inner harbor, it was marked by automobile terminals to lumber, steel and ships repair terminals. We maneuver the channel like a fly on the wall, out of everyone’s way before heading for the inner harbor marina.

With Camden Yards a short walk away, my first inclination is to catch some good games in town but the Orioles are away at Toronto and the Ravens tickets are impossible to find. Also Claudia, our ship’s official cruise director, dictates our social calendar, did not endorse any of my sports nonsense, it’ll be cultural and history for the day. Looks like we’ll be off to the Visionary Art museum, Fort McHenry, Federal Hill, Fells Point and Top of the World observation tower. Gonna be a busy day.
