Yesterday Virginia governor Glenn Youngkin declared a State of Emergency in advance of Hurricane Ian, which is expected to impact portions of Virginia starting on Friday, September 30. We decided to move our boat from Alexandria, VA across the river to Washington DC, National Harbor marina.
The Alexandria city marina is exposed to the Northeasterly from tropical storm Ian and is very much prone to a typical 3-5 feet of flooding on the streets and docks. Across the river at the National Harbor marina, though more expensive and further away from Kara and Ryan’s house, the move to a more protected harbor, is well worth the safety and comfort.
National Harbor marina gladly took our last minute reservation since many boating activities have been canceled due to the storm, leaving them with plenty of empty spots. We quickly motored out of Alexandria and into the white caps of the Potomac and effortlessly docked across the river and hunker down for the next few days.
Good news on the insurance front, we finally heard back from our insurance agent that the underwriter had approved our amended policy for travel to Southern US and the Bahamas. But we can not cross Cumberland Island, GA until after November 1st, due to the hurricane season. One more thing crossed off our list!
Hey Jim, Glad to hear that you’re safe and having a good time. But I am confused, are you playing this Sunday? Cole broke my finger last week and I could really use a kinder, gentler opponent.
I know you are on this great trip and all, but what about me…I have needs too. Enjoy
WC
Howdy Wayne, don’t look my way if you’re looking for kind and gentle, just ask John. Next Sunday, we’ll be on our way to Norfolk, VA. There might be some games with the Naval boys. I’ll be sure to demonstrate some 3 pointers to those officers and gentlemen. Thanks for checking in and tell the guys I really miss them.
My birthday was September 30 but it did not prevent me from thinking about you two. Good decisions about where you docked your vessel. Best wishes.
Happy Birthday!!! Hope you had your favorite meal and dessert💕💋💕
Better safe than sorry. Just “ Another port in the storm “. Very windy up here today. Safe travels!!!
Hope your weather is not too harsh down there. Looks like you might be getting a deluge. Stay safe and enjoy your little grand daughter!!
Hi Nancy, it’s a good day to be a duck and bake … wind, rain and fog.. lucky I have a granddaughter to play with 💕💕💕thanks for checking in on us.
So glad you guys are in a safe harbor!
Thanks Ed and hope you are enjoying your new place up in Maine. Please give Lenny our best!
Glad to hear the voyage is going well and wishing you luck with the hurricanes!
Hi Jerry, great to hear from you. Hope things are going well back home. We’re safely tucked in at DC. Please say hello to our team and tell them I miss them.
I’m glad you found a safer spot for the boat. I hope the storm is kind to you all there. I ll be saying an extra prayer for you tonight.
Thanks Sally !!! Tonight and Sunday is when we will get hit 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
Jim and his handling of Fujiko often reminds me of Russell Crowe, in the film Master and Commander.
At all times, he keeps his vessel and crew safe and sound.
But even Captain Jack Aubrey couldn’t succeed without his best friend and sounding board, Dr Stephen Maturin.
Luckily for Jim, he has been blessed with the lovely Lady Claudia!
I’ve never met a better crew!
Stay safe Fujiko!
You are absolutely right about the best first mate in the world – Lady Claudia. Thanks for the kind words but I will need to remind you that our journey is long and there’s plenty of mistakes and blunders to be made. Just wait.
So glad to hear you and Fujiko are more protected for the coming storm. Better safe than sorry, and now you have the added security of knowing your insurance is in place. I’m sure that’s a load off your mind. Keep in touch and let us know how you fare this Friday storm. Love you
Hi Trish, Yes it’s such a relief that we got insurance and can continue this adventure … fingers crossed that this storm will be kind to Fujiko🤞🏻🤞🏻⛵️
